Senior Leaders, Youth Leaders & Junior Leaders– Summer 2020

Kensington Community Centre is seeking energetic, capable, team-oriented individuals who are interested in creating a dynamic, stimulating and safe day camp program for children 6- 8yrs, 9-12yrs – youth 12 16yrs in the Kensington community, while earning valuable career experience and a summer income.

Junior Leader: (Age Group 6-12yrs)
• Plans to pursue a career in Recreation, Education, Social Sciences and Humanities, Kinesiology, Child and Youth Care, or planning to enter into post-secondary studies in general Arts and/or Sciences, with an interest in the Humanities.
• A strong interest in developing skills-building such as: teamwork, leadership, healthy lifestyles, etc.
• Please note: Kensington has authorized an affirmative action program to hire a junior leader with second language skills, (subject to minimum requirements) in keeping with outreach initiative to the Chinese, Vietnamese, Pilipino and/or South Asian communities, as many of our recently-immigrated client families speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Punjabi.
Senior/Youth Leaders: (Age Group 6-12yrs or 12-16yrs)
• At least one year Post-Secondary education in Recreation, Education, Social Work, Human Kinetics/Kinesiology, Child and Youth Care
• Those in general Arts and/or Sciences, with an interest in the Humanities disciplines.
All Positions:
• A strong interest in developing skills-building such as: teamwork, leadership, healthy lifestyles, etc
• Experience working in a Day Camp or program delivery setting as leader or volunteer
• Current Emergency First Aid/CPR (Minimum).
• Strong knowledge of a wide variety of age appropriate activities and out-trips for 6 -12 years or 12-16yrs, in the areas of sport, the arts (including music and crafts), culture, outdoor recreation and environmental studies.
• Demonstrated successful leadership, problem solving, administrative and planning skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Mentor other leaders and/or volunteers in personal development of age-appropriate leadership skills.
• Ability and willingness to work with children who are from diverse cultural, economic and social backgrounds.
• Fluency in a second language is an asset.
• Experience with working within a budget and tracking expenses.
• Demonstrated administrative skills in program planning, evaluation and reporting.
• Ability to work independently and within a team.

Responsibilities included but not limited to:
• Provide direct leadership, supervision and instruction to the assigned Day Camp participants.
• Senior Leaders will provide supervision of Junior Leader staff and volunteers in the absence of Day Camp Manager
• To work within a team to plan, advertise and implement a wide range of age appropriate day camp activities that fit the themes developed by the Day Camp Manager in a safe, educational & fun environment.
• To work cooperatively with and provide a positive role model to participants, volunteers and other members of the Day Camp and Kensington Centre staff at all times.
• To track and report petty cash usage on a weekly basis and submit expense receipts accurately.
• To follow at all times, established procedures and guidelines to ensure the safety of all program participants and staff.
• Collect information for incomplete medical & waiver forms from participants each week and ensure that the check in & sign out of children is conducted in a safe & efficient manner, daily.
• To build positive relationships with participants, parents, guardians, co-worker’s and the community through active participation in program activities
o To provide feedback to parents, guardians and participants that fosters self-confidence, and positive social behaviours.
• To assist the Project Manager in the preparation of a final report evaluating the Day Camps and making recommendations for future programs.

Terms/Conditions of Employment
• Successful Criminal Record Clearance
• Must be between the ages for 16 and 30 years.
• Preference will be given to those who are choosing careers in Recreation, Education, Social Work, Psychology, Human Kinetics, Child and Youth Care
• Junior Leaders: $16.00: Senior/Youth Leaders: $17.00 per hour + 4% vacation pay
• 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday, 10 weeks
• Dependent upon funding from Human Resources and Social Development (Government of Canada)
