International Day for the Elimination
of Racial Discrimination: March 21, 2007
In recognition of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the City of Vancouver will once again host a ceremony in council chambers, on March 21, 2007 featuring: guest speakers, performers, video and an official declaration. Stay tuned for the official program details.
In the mean time ... if you would like to TAKE CREATIVE ACTION on the issue, then why not write some poetry and submit it to the Write off Racism Contest. Winners receive cool prizes and might even get profiled !
History of the Day:
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was first established in 1966, following a tragic event that shocks the conscience: the massacre of young students peacefully protesting against apartheid laws, adopted by the South African government, a brutal regime that applied the theory of inequality between races, regardless of humanity's moral and ethical advances. Proclaiming the International Day, the United Nations General Assembly called upon the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
